Empowering Vision: World Sight Day 2023
Every year, on World Sight Day, I reflect on the incredible journey that led to the formation of the Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation and the impactful work we do to combat avoidable blindness. As the founder of this organisation, I'm honoured to share our vision for a brighter future on this special occasion.
The Significance of World Sight Day
World Sight Day, organised by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), is a global event that shines a spotlight on the critical issue of blindness and vision impairment. It serves as a rallying point for individuals, organisations, and governments to unite in the quest to eliminate avoidable blindness and promote eye health worldwide.
The Birth of the Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation
The journey of the Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation began with a shared vision between myself and Dr. Sanduk Ruit, a remarkable ophthalmologist. We recognised that avoidable blindness was a widespread, yet solvable problem, and we were determined to make a difference. Our foundation was born out of a commitment to provide quality eye care to those who needed it most, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
Our Pioneering Work in Vision Restoration
One of our proudest achievements has been our pioneering work in restoring vision to those suffering from cataracts. Dr. Ruit's groundbreaking technique for cataract surgery has enabled us to bring back the gift of sight to countless individuals in underserved regions. By making this high-quality eye care both accessible and affordable, we have successfully prevented avoidable blindness on a substantial scale.
Investing in Technology and Innovation
At the Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation, we believe that innovation is key to tackling the global challenge of avoidable blindness. We've made substantial investments in research and technology, leveraging artificial intelligence for the early detection of eye diseases. Our aim is to create sustainable solutions that can transform eye care and make it more accessible to all.
Building Local Capacity for Sustainable Impact
We understand that creating lasting change requires more than just surgical interventions. To ensure our impact endures, we've focused on training local eye care professionals. By empowering these professionals with the skills and knowledge they need, we're building the capacity to address eye health issues at the community level, thus ensuring long-term sustainability.
Fostering Collaborative Partnerships
Our foundation thrives on collaboration. We work hand in hand with a wide array of organisations, governments, and local communities to create a holistic approach to eye health. These partnerships allow us to extend our reach and join forces with others who share our vision of a world without avoidable blindness.
A Call to Action on World Sight Day
As we mark World Sight Day 2023, I urge everyone to join us in our mission. You can make a meaningful impact by supporting organisations like ours, spreading awareness about the importance of regular eye check-ups, volunteering your time, or contributing to research efforts aimed at advancing eye health.
World Sight Day is a day of reflection, gratitude, and a renewed commitment to our shared mission. At the Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation, we remain steadfast in our dedication to eliminating avoidable blindness and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to see a brighter, clearer future. Together, we can empower vision and change lives for the better.
