Supporting the Future

Supporting the Future

Forward:Thinking is a series that will feature stories about my ventures into real estate, esports, blindness, poverty, artificial intelligence and everything in between.

Investing in a business is always a risky move, however, when done well the rewards are always worth the risk. Investing in the support of those in need can also be risky - but it is almost certain that someone is going to live a better life thanks to that investment.

Over the years, I have invested in a multitude of ventures. Whether that be esports, artificial intelligence or philanthropic efforts, there has always been at least one plate spinning. One of my most impactful investments from the last few years has been getting involved with Open Bionics. Through the Tej Kohli Foundation and Future Bionics.

With this programme, we have seen many young people receive a new lease on life. The Tej Kohli Future Bionics program has funded bionic arms for children from Bristol-based robotics developer Open Bionics. This company builds and develops low-cost bionic limbs that support those with limb disabilities. The program highlights how technology can substantially improve the lives and confidence of young people living with disabilities. My aim with this investment was to inspire others to get involved with such ventures.

The Open Bionics ‘Hero Arm' is controlled by electrical signals generated by a user’s muscles. It also has multi-grip functionality that allows users to perform more everyday activities compared to traditional prosthetics. The arm is also able to be personalised which can also give a huge boost to confidence,  mental well-being and social acceptance.

Over the last few years, the team from the Tej Kohli Foundation has kept up with some of the young people that were gifted the Hero Arm. One person was 19-year-old, Gracie. Gracie is a talented performer and actress from West London. She was born without her arm below her left elbow - but never let this stand in the way of achieving her dream. At such a young age, Gracie has already performed in many live productions and television spots. Now, with the addition of her Hero Arm, she can aim even higher than before.

This particular investment has seen greatness and generosity follow. Investing in supporting others is something that I hold as high importance. Being able to do this is something that has translated over to the Tej Kohli and Ruit Foundation which has grown significantly over the last few years. The hope is to continue to support those who need the help.
